The final phase of work for the new school is comprised of the specifications for the Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FFE), including the Technology equipment (interactive white boards, computers, and servers). The plans, specifications and cost estimates for this scope of work were reviewed and approved by the Public Building & Site Commission on November 23, and the Board of Education on December 1, 2015. This phase of work, like all previous phases, continues to meet budget projections. The plans and estimates will be submitted to the State in mid-December and approval is expected from them by mid-January, 2016. The work will be let out to bid by February. Playground Design & Artwork | 23-June-2015
A joint meeting of the Public Building & Site Commission and the Board of Education was held June 23 at the Municipal Center to hear and review updates on the construction and the latest design work. The Landscape Architecture firm of Richter & Cegan presented the conceptual designs for the two playgrounds at the school site, which were developed through three meetings with a playground committee organized by SHS staff. The designs incorporated all of the components on the school’s “wish list” and is projected to come in about $90,000 under budget. Svigals + Partners also gave a presentation on the development of proposed integrated art elements, including three weathervanes, wood carvings on the front façade, a tile mosaic on the cistern, and large-scale fiberglass sculptural elements featured in the lobby. Construction Team Gears Up | 7-April-2015 The sub-contractors were invited to a Partnering event, co-hosted by Consigli Construction and Svigals + Partners, on April 7 at Edmond Town Hall. The event provided a unique opportunity for contractors to meet with members of the design and construction administration team and learn how the current plans represent the community participation in the design process. Site construction activities have been underway since October 2014, and now that the remaining construction contracts have been awarded, the entire construction team is gearing up for an intense push for the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2015. Approval of Final GMP | 10-Mar-2015
At a special meeting of the Public Building & Site Commission, Consigli Construction presented their Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) based on receiving the final bids for Phase 4 - Building Construction. Four bid packages were re-bid in February and they all came in under budget, making the final total GMP under budget and allowing the PBSC to consider some of the Add Alternates.
PBSC Approves 20 Bids | 7-Feb-2015
The Public Building & Site Commission approved awarding contracts to twenty sub-contractors, as presented by Consigli Construction. The Commission also approved re-bidding four bid packages, which will go out by the end of the month.
Phase 4 Out to Bid | 20-Nov-2014 The documents for the construction of the school building, Phase 4 of 6 phases, have gone out to bid as of November 20, 2014. Each phase has been bid separately, starting with Phase 1 Abatement and Phase 2 Demolition, both in October 2013, and Phase 3 Site Work in August 2014. Advertisements for bidders were posted in the Newtown Bee and Hartford Courant, as well as being posted on the CT DAS website as required for state-funded projects. Various bid packages are due December 18, 2014 and January 6, 2015.
First Day of Site Work | 21-Oct-2014
Consigli Construction officially began site work on Tuesday, October 21. Initial activities will focus on tree-clearing, earthwork and retaining walls, followed by construction of the new leg of Dickinson Drive that provides a new route to the interior of the school site. Legislative Council Approves use of Dickinson Drive | 8-Jan-2014
The Design Team presented two options for an access drive to the school property to the Legislative Council at their January 8, 2014 meeting. The team had prepared concept plans and 3-D animations to illustrate and compare the qualities of the two options: Dickinson Drive and 12 Riverside Road. The Educational Specifications is a document prepared by the Design Team to outline the spaces and requirements for the new facility. The DT developed the document through meetings and interviews with Interim Superintendent John Reed, Sandy Hook principal Kathy Gombos, Sandy Hook teachers and staff, as well as Department of Education and Town staff.
