The Town of Newtown has demolished the former Sandy Hook School facility and will rebuild a state-of-the-art PreK-4 school on the existing property at 12 Dickinson Drive. Newtown underwent an extensive evaluation of potential sites, renovations, expansion and/or new construction of the Sandy Hook School before deciding to rebuild on the existing site. The Site Evaluation Study dated April 12, 2013 can be viewed here. Public meeting minutes and decisions regarding the site selection are also available on the Town’s website.

The Public Building and Site Commission of the Town of Newtown (PB&SC) has control of the supervision and construction of building projects including major new construction, alteration or extension, furnishing or equipping of a building to be used for public purposes including the acquisition and improvement of land. The Public Building and Site Commission consists of seven volunteer members appointed by the First Selectman and confirmed by the Board of Selectmen. The PB&SC will have responsibility for the management of the design and construction of the new Sandy Hook School.

In addition, the Town of Newtown has engaged the services of Diversified Project Management (DPM) to serve as the Town’s representative throughout the design and construction process. DPM assists the PB&SC in all aspects of managing the project, from solicitation and selection of the design team and construction manager, to managing the project schedule and budget.

The new school will be approximately 80,000 gross square feet and will be designed to meet LEED Gold standards. The school will also benefit from new security standards being developed by the State of Connecticut and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

In May-June 2013, RFQs (Request for Qualifications) were released for public bidding to solicit firms for Construction Management, Site Planning and Architectural/Engineering Services. After review by the PB&SC, three (3) construction management firms and seven (7) architecture/engineering firms were shortlisted for interviews held in late July 2013.

In early September 2013, the Board of Selectmen announced that Consigli Construction Company had been chosen as the Construction Manager (CM), along with Svigals + Partners as the Architect/Engineer (A/E) firm leading the Design Team.
